It has been months since Xiaomi announced they’ll be upgrading the Redmi Note 8 and Note 8 Pro to Android 11. Since then, the closed beta group has received the update for both devices while only the Chinese version of the Redmi Note 8 had its public build released. From our previous report, the Note 8 Pro “currently do not meet the company’s full internal OTA upgrade quality standards.” While developers are working to resolve the issue, they’re pushing a fresh Android 11 based MIUI 12 update in China, hinting at imminent global release.
Xiaomi released Android 11 in China for the Redmi Note 8 on February 20, 2021. Usually, it takes two weeks after the Chinese rollout for the update to arrive on global models, but that didn’t happen. Apparently, the company needed time to address bugs on the build before pushing it to the Global variants. That seems to be the case, given the bugs that arrived with Android 11. Some of them are yet to be fixed, especially gestures not working on third-party launchers and notification bugs. However, it seems most of them are issues with Android 11, and hence, we might see them fixed with Android 12.
Meanwhile, Xiaomi has released a new Android 11-based MIUI 12 update for the Redmi Note 8 in China. The update is arriving nearly four months after the initial release, making us believe the Android 11 update for the global Redmi Note 8 could be imminent. Given the time it took for a fresh update, we believe the issues with the first build have been addressed, giving us reason for imminent global release.
The new update has a version number – MIUI 12.0.3.0 RCOCNXM – and weighs in at 267MB. On the update log is “stable MIUI based on Android 11.” If you’re running the Chinese Stable ROM, you can check for the update via the updater app or download the Recovery ROM here.
