Google eventually issued a long-awaited Pixel Buds Pro update with Spatial Audio functionality earlier this year. The function is meant to improve listener immersion when watching any media that supports it, primarily by mimicking a cinema-like auditory experience when watching movies and videos (5.1 or 7.1 surround sound). But now, a head tracking feature is coming to the Pixel Buds Pro in addition to the Spatial audio.

Google had also promised another feature — the Head Tracking feature — and it appears that consumers will soon get it as well. This is according to an APK deconstruction performed by 9to5Google, who discovered that the Pixel Buds app would gain a new options page where owners will be able to select between having Spatial Audio switched on or off. Nonetheless, the website has a toggle for the Head Trac feature, indicating that it is on its way.

The most unique aspect of this new settings page is that it features a demo film with nature noises and symphonic music emanating from various angles. Google most likely included this to assist Pixel Buds Pro owners in distinguishing between Spatial Audio and Head Tracking being switched on or off. If you don’t like how things sound, you may simply switch back to conventional stereo audio.

Remember that you’ll need a Pixel 6/6 Pro or a Pixel 7/7 Pro to use Spatial Audio and, presumably, the future Head Tracking feature. As of yet, Google has said nothing about putting these capabilities on its less expensive Pixel “a” series, which is widely regarded as among the best budget phones on the market.

Given how complete the implementation of Head Tracking appears to be, it wouldn’t be unreasonable to expect the functionality soon. It might be included in the forthcoming Pixel Feature Drop, which is expected to arrive in March.
