Qualcomm’s latest offering, the Snapdragon 4 Gen 2 processor, brings increased overall efficiency to the table, although the specific foundry remains undisclosed. Notably, this new chip boasts advancements compared to its predecessors. While the Gen 1 chip was manufactured at 6nm (TSMC), the Snapdragon 4 Gen 2 is manufactured at 8nm (Samsung), offering improved performance.

The new CPU configuration features two-speed cores clocked at 2.2GHz and six efficiency cores running at 2.0GHz. This combination delivers a notable 10% performance improvement over the SD 4 Gen 1 chip. Details regarding the Adreno GPU remain undisclosed, while display support is limited to FHD+ resolution at 120fps.

Significantly, the new processor integrates faster LPDDR5X RAM, capable of operating at speeds of up to 3,200MHz. Manufacturers can also opt for UFS 3.1 (2-lane) storage, enabling faster data access and storage capabilities. For further specifications, refer to the table shared in the article via GSMArena.

While the camera hardware is reduced to a dual-ISP (image signal processor), the Snapdragon 4 Gen 2 introduces an exciting new feature called Multi-Camera Temporal Filtering (MCTF). MCTF enhances video noise reduction, resulting in improved video quality. Video capture remains limited to 1080p at 60 frames per second, with additional support for 720p at 120 frames per second for slow-motion recording. Electronic Image Stabilization (EIS) is now enabled, ensuring smoother footage. The processor supports cameras with resolutions of up to 108MP or up to 32MP with Zero Shutter Lag. Autofocus performance has also been enhanced for quicker and more precise focusing.

Continuing the legacy of its predecessor, the Snapdragon 4 Gen 2 processor supports Quick Charge 4+, allowing for rapid battery charging. According to Qualcomm, the chip can charge a battery to 50% in just 15 minutes, although further details are not provided. The USB-C interface offers USB 3.2 Gen 1 speeds of up to 5Gbps, providing efficient data transfer.

In terms of connectivity, the processor incorporates power-saving features and improved cell-based positioning accuracy introduced by 3GPP Release 16. The X61 modem supports 4×4 MIMO (up to 100MHz bandwidth) and offers impressive down and up rates of up to 2.5Gbps.

However, local connectivity remains unchanged, with support for Wi-Fi 5 (ac) at 2.4GHz and 5GHz, along with Bluetooth 5.1 featuring aptX for high-quality audio streaming.

The first smartphones featuring the Snapdragon 4 Gen 2 processor are set to hit the market in the second half of this year. Xiaomi’s Redmi and Vivo are among the first brands expected to introduce devices powered by this innovative chipset.

As the Snapdragon 4 Gen 2 processor prepares to make its debut, consumers can anticipate a powerful and efficient performance in their next smartphones. Qualcomm’s commitment to pushing the boundaries of mobile technology continues, delivering enhanced capabilities to enrich the user experience.
