Google has been quietly working on new electric vehicle (EV)-related features for Android Auto, enhancing the experience for EV owners. Recent upgrades to Android Auto include the ability to manually identify your car as an electric vehicle and activate EV capabilities in Google Maps on Android Auto. These features are accessible through the built-in settings menu of Android Auto under a new section called “EV Settings.”

Further details on Electric Vehicles Android Auto features

One notable feature is the ability to select the charging plug type that your car uses. The options include J1772, CCS (Combo 1 and 2), Type 2, and CHAdeMO. However, there is currently no mention of Tesla’s North American Charging Standard (NACS), which is widely adopted by other EVs planned for the US market. It is possible that support for NACS could be introduced in a future release.

In addition, there are strings in the code indicating the presence of battery meters, suggesting that users may be able to monitor their EV’s charge levels directly through Android Auto. However, more context is needed to confirm this functionality.

The development of these new Electric Vehicles features in Android Auto started with version 9.5, but it appears that they have now been introduced in Android Auto 9.9. SmartDroid, a technology publication, has provided demonstrations of the new settings options in action, showcasing the EV features.

With these enhancements, Android Auto is becoming more EV-friendly, offering features that cater to the specific needs of electric vehicle owners. These updates aim to improve the overall usability and convenience of Android Auto for EV users.
