With new phones released every few months, it becomes difficult to support older devices. That’s the case with Redmi 9C NFC, Redmi 9 Prime, Redmi K30 Ultra, and POCO M2 Pro. These devices have been added to the EOS (End of Support) list, meaning they won’t receive official updates moving forward.
Brief History of Redmi 9C NFC
Xiaomi released Redmi 9C NFC in August 2020, running Android 10 based on MIUI 12. It was upgraded to Android 11 with the stable MIUI 12.5 update but has remained there. Since the upgrade to Android 11, the device has only received a few updates and has now got into the End of Support list.
Moving forward, Xiaomi will not send official updates to the device, both MIUI and Android OS updates. However, if a major vulnerability is detected, the company might release an update to patch it, but that rarely happens.
Redmi 9 Prime
Redmi 9 Prime was also released in 2020, running Android 10 based on MIUI 11. It got the MIUI 12 update in January 2021 and upgraded to Android 11 with a stable MIUI 12.5 update later that year. Since then, Xiaomi hasn’t pushed many updates to the device, which it has now included in its EOS list.
Redmi K30 Ultra
Released in August 2020, running Android 10 and MIUI 12. In March 2021, the device received Android 11 with a stable MIUI 12 update in China. In March 202, the phone started testing Android 12, but it seems Xiaomi abandoned it.
POCO M2 Pro
POCO M2 Pro arrived in July 2020. It runs Android 10 based on MIUI 12 and upgraded to Android 11 in 2021. The device got an upgrade to Android 12 with a stable MIUI 13 update in 2022, which is where the journey ended, as regards new MIUI or Android OS upgrades.
These devices won’t receive any updates from Xiaomi moving forward. We recommend getting a new device if your device security is a concern. Perhaps you can install custom ROM, but it comes with some issues unless you’re familiar with them.
FQ&A
What’s Xiaomi EOS List
Xiaomi’s EOS list are phones that won’t receive updates from the company moving forward. These devices have elapsed their support period, which is mostly three years for mid-range phones. Premium phones get up to five years of security, given the recent change in update policy.
Does the device in the EOS list receive updates?
There may be a situation where an update is released to devices on the EOS list, and that’s if a security vulnerability is detected. The company can send a security patch to resolve the issue, but that rarely happens. To be on the safer side, we recommend getting a new device.
How many years will my new Xiaomi phone get an update?
It depends on the device you get. Premium Xiaomi phones now receive three major Android OS updates and five years of security patches. However, the company recently raised it to four Android OS upgrades with the release of Redmi K60 Ultra.
