Android 15 reaches platform stability with stable release still months ahead

With the Android 15 Beta 3 release, Google reached a milestone for the next Android OS update. It means developer APIs and all-app-facing behaviours will not see changes moving forward. However, we are still a couple of months before the stable Android 15 update starts rolling out for eligible users.

Google released the first Android 15 beta update in March, which has been followed up with subsequent releases. The latest release means the company has achieved platform stability for the upcoming OS, meaning developers can start testing their apps targeting Android 15.

Nevertheless, Android 15 Beta 3 has new features, system optimizations, and bug fixes. We already mentioned some of these new additions in a separate post, which you can access from this link.

Meanwhile, there is an improved User Experience for Passkeys and Credential Manager. With the new feature, users can sign into apps targetting Android 15 with fingerprint, facial recognition, or screen lock in a single step.

If the sign-in prompt is mistakenly dismissed, Passkey and other Credential Manager suggestions can be accessed from the keyboard’s suggestion row and in username/password dropdown menus.

Android 15 Beta 3 is available for all eligible Pixel phone users and the Android Emulator. It has a build number AP31.240517.022 and comes with the June 2024 to increase system security. The update is rolling out via OTA and must have arrived on your device if you registered for the beta program.

With everything moving as planned, we expect the stable Android 15 update to start rolling out in October 2024. Google still needs to optimize the performance of the next Android OS, and given all the work involved, we believe there are still a few months before the update becomes available for everyone.
