WhatsApp is working on multiple features for the messaging app. Before each new addition is introduced, it is first rolled to beta testers for preview. However, not every new feature that made it to beta rolls out to the public, but the status update mentioned feature looks like it will arrive for the public.
WhatsApp started testing the latest addition in March 2024. It’s now rolling widely to limited users on Android, meaning it is likely to arrive for everyone in the coming weeks.
What is Status Update Mention Feature and how will it work?
What the Status Update Mention Feature does is allow users to mention a contact on their status. When a contact is mentioned, they will get an instant notification, making it easy to interact with the status or reshare to their audience.
According to the screenshot shared by Wabetainfo, to mention a contact, you will use the @ at the caption bar when uploading a video or photo to your status. The option is available before publishing the status, making it easy to select the contacts you want to mention
As expected, only the person mentioned on the status gets a notification, meaning it’s private. Other viewers of the status don’t get to see who is mentioned. The mentioned contact can reshare the status using the reshare button next to the reply box when viewing the status.
The original creator is private when the status is reshared. In addition, the mentioned contact won’t be visible to status viewers. It remains private between the creator and the mentioned contacts. Interestingly, if you have muted someone from viewing your status, mentioning them will bypass the restrictions.
