Affordable Samsung phones to get six years of Android OS updates
Apple was the company with the longest update support until Google announced seven years of Android OS and security patch commitment. Samsung followed months after with the Galaxy S24 series, which is carried over to the Galaxy Z Fold 6 and Z Flip 5. Now, the company is extending the support period for its affordable Galaxy phones.
Smartphone quality has improved in the past few years, with some phones lasting for years. With original parts now available, replacing your device doesn’t have to be because of security support. That has seen smartphone makers boost their security support period, which has been exclusive to premium phones until now.
Only Google Pixel 8a will receive seven years of Android updates and security patches. However, the device costs nearly $500, but Samsung plans to release six versions of Android for the upcoming $199 phone, which is impressive. It will be the first entry-level phone to get that number of updates, although we don’t know if it will be carried over to other phones in that price range.

The marketing material published by Tech Outlook listed the specs of the Galaxy A16. Although it’s an improvement over the predecessor, many people will be interested in the supposed six years of Android updates and security support. Of course, Samsung has yet to confirm the changes, but we expect that during the device launch.
When the company confirms six years of Android updates and security support for its affordable device, it will be an additional four years, given that devices in this category only get two or four years of update maximum. Hopefully, it won’t be limited to the Galaxy A16 but extend to other entry-level phones.
