Affordable Samsung phones to get 6 years of software updates

Smartphone makers have boosted the number of years they support their phones in the past few months. The trend started with Google Pixel phones before Samsung confirmed its flagship Galaxy S224 series would get seven years of software support. Interestingly, the Korean company has confirmed 6 years of software support for its mid-range Galaxy A16.

6 years of software support

The Galaxy A16 has probably set the tone, and we would expect all phones launched under the series to get at least six years of software support. This might mean that the Galaxy A5x series will get seven years of Android OS, given they are more expensive than the A1x series. However, it remains a speculation until Samsung confirms it.

In the future, we expect most mid-range phones launched under the Galaxy A1x series to get up to six years of support. Unfortunately, the company won’t extend the current support period to older phones, as it did with the Galaxy S24 series. Only future devices will benefit from the recent changes.

But then, would the Galaxy A16 still be functional in 2030? With the new policy, Samsung will support the device with the latest security patches and Android OS updates for the next six years. The phone will probably be running Android 20 when the support period expires. It will be interesting to see how the A16 is holding up in the next few years.

While we wait for confirmation on other phones eligible for six years of software support, the Galaxy A16 is already on the list. We expect it to expand in the coming weeks when Samsung releases new mid-range phones. Follow our social media platforms for updates.
