Google is reviewing its update policy for the first two generations of the Tensor-powered Pixel phones to extend their support period by two more years. The recent development means the Pixel 6, Pixel 7, and Pixel Fold are eligible for Android 16 and possibly Android 17.
It would be the third time Google has reviewed its update policy since the launch of the Pixel 6 series. The release of the first Tensor Pixel phone saw the company move from three years of Android OS updates and security patches to three years of OS and five years of security support.
The second change came with the Pixel 8 series release, which was carried over to the Pixel 9 series. Google promised to support these phones for seven years with Android OS updates and security patches. And given the inclusion of the Pixel 6 in the Android 16 Developer Preview, questions were asked whether Google is extending the device support period.
Google confirms Pixel 6 and Pixel 7 Android OS updates support extension
Well, the company has silently answered the question with a recent review of their update policy. The tech company has updated its support page to confirm the extension of the Pixel 6 and Pixel 7 series support period. The duo is now eligible for five years of Android OS updates.
These phones, including Pixel Fold, will get updates for 5 years starting from when the device first became available on the Google Store in the US. This includes 5 years of OS and security updates, and may also include new and upgraded features with Pixel Drops
It is commendable, as consumers will not have to ditch their Pixel 6 phones due to lack of updates since the device still functions well. Unfortunately, the Pixel Tablet isn’t part of the change, and hopefully, the upcoming Model will get seven years of support like the current Pixel models.
