Xiaomi is one of the biggest smartphone manufacturing companies in the world. The tech company ships millions of phones yearly, with mid-range and entry-level devices making up a big part. It makes sense for the company to review the software support period of these handsets to encourage more people to buy them. They might have quietly done that, as Redmi Note 14 4G is listed on the software support page with six years of security support.

For months now, Xiaomi has released the latest security patch update every month, unlike before when it happened at random. However, the company is not consistent enough. No Xiaomi phone, including the premium ones, is sure of the new patch update. Sometimes, the company releases updates on select phones, making it difficult to say which phones will get a new update this month.

Nevertheless, they have been working to improve on that. Last year, one of the company executives said the company would start releasing updates to eligible phones monthly, just like Google and Samsung. So far, there have not been any changes, but that might be coming soon. Perhaps they plan to start by reviewing the number of years their device is supported.

Most Xiaomi phones get only two Android OS upgrades with four years of security support. This has been the support period of the Redmi Note series phone until recently. However, only the international models of the Redmi Note 14 4G will have their software support period extended. According to Xiaomi’s product page, the device will get four Android OS updates and six years of security support.

The Redmi Note 14 4G debuted with Android 14, meaning it will get up to Android 18, coming in 2027, probably. Xiaomi will stop supporting the device in 2031. Interestingly, the Redmi Note 14 5G and the Redmi Note 14 Pro models will get two Android OS updates and four years of security support.

Does this mean Xiaomi has changed its software support policy?

We do not think so. Initially, we thought the listing was an error, but it seems the company knows what they are doing since they have not corrected it. It is probably a one-off arrangement since only the Redmi Note 14 4G will get updated for six years. With the way Xiaomi abandons their phones, as regards updates, we doubt they will support the device for that long. But we might be wrong, and we hope the extended support period is gets to other phones as well.
