Since May, some Android users have been receiving alerts about the Privacy Sandbox, and now it’s here with a concise notification: “New ads privacy features now available.” This new Android ads privacy settings empowers users with greater control over the advertisements they see while safeguarding their identity.
Here’s a summary of how it works: Android notes topics of interest based on the apps users have recently used. These topics help apps determine what users like, and later, apps can request this information to show personalized ads. The magic lies in users being able to choose which topics and apps are used to display ads, ensuring a tailored and relevant ad experience.
On Android 13 (with a Pixel device), users can access the new Android Ads privacy settings by heading to Settings > Security & privacy > More privacy settings > Ads. Here, they will find a fresh graphic and menu presenting three settings with convenient on/off toggles:
- Ad topics: This setting allows users to control topics of interest that are derived from recently used apps and used to show personalized ads. Users can view example categories like Arts & Entertainment, Dance, Local news, Movies, Outdoors, Real Estate, and Stocks & Bonds. The best part is users can remove or block topics as they wish, and Android automatically deletes these topics regularly. This feature uses the Topics API.
- App-suggested ads: Users can now prevent apps from determining their preferences and suggesting ads on other applications. Thanks to the FLEDGE API, individual applications can be blocked from reporting user data for ad suggestions.
- Ad measurement: This setting enables apps and advertisers to request information from Android to measure the performance of their ads. Users have the option to turn this feature on or off, and Google ensures that ad measurement data is regularly deleted for privacy protection.
While these new Ad privacy settings are not yet widely available, Android users can expect them to roll out via Google Play services in the coming weeks.
