Google’s latest Feature Drop update brings June 2024 security patch

Google is currently testing Android 15 beta builds, which should enter a stable phase in the coming days. The tech giant hasn’t given up on Android 14 entirely as it releases the final Feature Drop based on the current version of Android, Android 14 QPR3.

Latest feature drop update

The latest Feature Drop update started testing in February. It probably means enough time for Google to detect and address any bug. However, it’s not always the case, and we recommend backing up your data before installing the 661MB package.

As expected, the update brings the June 2024 security patch to increase system security and stability. Of course, there are new features, but we understand not many user-facing ones arrived with the update. However, folks on AndroidFaithful have highlighted some of the latest additions.

Latest Feature Drop Update changelog (June 2024 security patch)

  • New “high quality mode” to the USB webcam feature. .
  • Shows a preview before you change the keyboard layout for a connected physical keyboard.
  • Renames the top-level Settings page for “passwords & accounts” to “passwords, passkeys, & autofill.”
  • Adds a new “keyboard vibration” toggle under Settings > Sound & vibration > Vibration & haptics that globally controls whether keyboard haptics are enabled (so long as the keyboard app supports that).
  • When you adjust the brightness from the slider in Quick Settings, there’s now a subtle haptic effect (on some devices).
  • Two new accessibility options for physical keyboard users: “sticky keys” and “bounce keys”. Sticky keys make it easier to enter keyboard shortcuts in quick succession. When you press a modifier key like Ctrl or Alt with sticky keys enabled, it’ll stay pressed so you don’t have to hold it down while pressing other keys. Bounce keys let the system ignore rapid, repeated presses of the same key.
  • Under Settings > Security & privacy > More security & privacy, there’s a new “allow camera software extensions” toggle that’s enabled by default. This toggle “enables the default software implementation of advanced camera features, such as Eyes Free videography.” This feature basically lets the Android OS provide some fallback Camera2/CameraX vendor extensions in cases where the OEMs don’t provide their own.

It might interest you that 22 security vulnerabilities are addressed with the June 2024 update. These security flaws range from high to critical. We recommend installing the update when prompted, and you might need to download it over Wi-Fi.

The update is available for everyone, and you can check it on your Pixel phone via Settings>>System>>Software updates>>System update. Follow the screen prompt to install the build, and reboot your device to complete the installation.
