Android Auto users have long been frustrated by the limitation that prevented them from launching Google Maps on their linked phones while using the Android Auto app. However, recent updates to both Google Maps on Android as well as Google Maps on Android Auto app seem to have addressed this issue.
Android Auto now supports running Google Maps: further details
Some users have reported being able to use Google Maps on their phones while Android Auto is active, marking a significant improvement for the platform.
Previously, attempting to launch Google Maps on the phone while Android Auto was running would result in an error message. This limitation was particularly frustrating because the phone version of Google Maps offers more features and functionality, such as additional destination data and user-created lists of places, which are not available on the Android Auto version.
While this change doesn’t appear to have been rolled out widely, some users have confirmed in a Reddit post that they can now launch Google Maps on Android Auto. The availability of this feature seems to be linked to Google Maps version 11.67.0701 and appears to work independently of the Android Auto app version.
However, it’s worth noting that a few users have reported encountering issues with opening the app despite having the correct version installed, suggesting that there may be some bugs to be resolved. Nonetheless, considering this is the first time such functionality has been observed, it is likely an intentional improvement.
