Since Apple launched the iPhone 14 with Dynamic Island, Android smartphone makers have attempted to replicate that. Google might integrate the feature at the system level and make it available for all Android phones with Android 16.
There is no doubt about the importance of Dynamic Island, perhaps the reason many Android users want it on their phones. Only a few smartphones have that feature, but Google might be planning on making it widely available. According to reports, the tech company is working on a new Rich Ongoing Notifications.
Details of the Dynamic Island-ish Rich Ongoing Notifications
Google released the Android 15 QPR1 Beta 3 update a few days ago. Folks at Android Authority managed to spot a new API called Rich Ongoing Notifications. Developers can leverage that to display pill-shaped chips in the status bar. It can also show app icons, a custom background, and text/time.
We have seen mockups of Rich Ongoing Notifications from Mishaal Rahman. The feature is used to display the time it will take for a cab to arrive and how much time before boarding a plane starts. Of course, apps have to support this before it can work, which is the reason we probably will not see it on Android for some time.
The next Feature Drop is in December, and it is possible the Dynamic Island-ish Rich Ongoing Notifications will not be rolling out with it. Google might release it as part of Android 16’s feature, but only time will tell. Nevertheless, we will keep you updated on the development. Let us see how long it takes before it becomes available for
everyone.
