As the sands of time continue to flow, the tech world keeps evolving, and with it comes the inevitable reality that older devices eventually lose the spotlight. Google, in its quest for progress and innovation, has made a significant announcement regarding the end of support for a specific Android version.

End of support for Android KitKat

Which Android version gets end of support?

The one bidding farewell is none other than Android 4.4, fondly known as Android KitKat, a version that has graced our devices for a decade. However, its journey is coming to an end as Google has declared that it will no longer support KitKat beginning in August.

The reasoning behind this decision, as stated in Google’s blog post, is that the active device count running on Android KitKat has dwindled to less than 1%. With newer Android versions bringing exciting features and enhanced functionalities, KitKat has gradually fallen behind the curve, making it less appealing to users. As a result, Google has decided to put it on indefinite hiatus when it comes to future updates of Google Play services.

If you happen to be among the few still rocking Android KitKat, fear not, for you have a bit more time in the 1% club. However, it’s essential to acknowledge that in the ever-changing landscape of technology, updates are vital for security, performance, and access to the latest features. So, while you’ve had a good run, it’s advisable to consider upgrading to a more recent Android version in the near future.

Speaking of new Android versions, exciting times lie ahead with the imminent arrival of Android 14. This upcoming version promises an array of intriguing features, including “Fidelity,” which allows for enhanced customization options. Major flagship phones from top manufacturers like Samsung, Motorola, OnePlus, Xiaomi, and Sony are gearing up to receive the Android 14 update. Devices such as the Google Pixel 8, Pixel 8 Pro, Galaxy S23 series, Galaxy Z Fold 5, Galaxy Z Flip 5, and OnePlus 11 are expected to be among the first to embrace this cutting-edge iteration.

However, don’t worry if your device isn’t on the initial list, as Android 14 will eventually make its way to other compatible devices from each manufacturer in subsequent releases. The Android ecosystem thrives on inclusivity, ensuring that users across a wide range of devices can benefit from the latest advancements.
