Google Pixel 6 series phones are the company’s most sophisticated phones to date. Debuted in October 2021, Google equipped the device with the latest and best features in the industry but failed to add the Face unlock option. That was probably forgiven until users started reporting the slow fingerprint unlock bug, which led to many people glamouring for Google to bring back the Face ID.
The Pixel 4 was the last Google device to utilize the Face unlock feature, which they dropped for a rear fingerprint scanner in the Pixel 5. With the Pixel 6, Google switched to an in-display fingerprint that has been plagued with multiple bugs. The recent issue with the Google Pixel 6 is the slow fingerprint bug, and surprisingly, Google claims it’s a security measure and not a bug.
Nevertheless, it’s always better to have multiple unlock options, and according to reports, Google is working on a Face unlock option for its Pixel 6 series phones. The latest report comes from Reddit, where a user who recently acquired a new Pixel 6 says Face unlock was among the screen unlock options while setting up his phone.
The screenshot posted on the r/GooglePixel seems to back up the claim, but we are yet to confirm if the Face ID worked after setting up the device. Perhaps, Google enabled Face unlock for select units, or it’s a mix up in software. The latter is more likely, given that it’s the first time such is been reported.
Update: the Face unlock doesn’t work after the option was used. Nevertheless, we expect Google to integrate the feature soon as reports point to the integration with Android 13.
