Like other smartphone brands, Xiaomi has been testing the Android 12 build internally for some time now. Google is expected to release the stable version of the new OS sometime next month or early October. Perhaps, it might debut with the upcoming Pixel 6. However, Xiaomi isn’t waiting for a stable release before seeding the first Xiaomi Mi 11 Android 12 update to its closed beta group in China.
The closed beta group where selected users participate in the development of MIUI ROM. Their job is to preview beta builds, give feedback and make suggestions. As expected, they’re the ones receiving the update in China. Luckily, you can download and install the build if you have TWRP recovery installed, but that might not be a wise decision.
The first Xiaomi Mi 11 Android 12 update is a beta build. That means it’s not stable enough as a daily driver, but that might not be the case. According to reports, the Chinese closed beta builds are more stable compared to ‘stable’ builds. You might still go ahead with an upgrade, but make sure to backup your data before.
Xiaomi released the update a couple of hours ago with a version number – MIUI 12.5 V 21.8.27 From the build number, the update started seeding today. However, it might take a few hours to arrive, given the nature of OTAs. Hence, if you’re an eligible Closed beta tester, you might have to wait a bit if you haven’t received the update. It comes in at a massive 4.1GB package, and unfortunately, there’s not much on the update log.
However, there’s a warning that comes with it. “This update is an Android cross-version upgrade. In order to reduce the risk of the upgrade, it is recommended to back up personal data in advance. This update takes a relatively long time to start and load, and performance and power consumption problems such as micro heat and micro card may occur within a short period of time after starting. Please be patient. Some third-party applications have no version adaptation, which will affect normal use. Please upgrade carefully.”
