Google and Samsung reviewed their update policy in the last few months. Both companies now offer seven years of Android OS updates, albeit only flagship phones for Samsung. The move has seen other OEMs increase the number of years they support their phones, and Motorola has joined the party.
When Samsung promised to support its phones for up to five years, no one thought they might renege on it along the line, but the same can’t be said about the recent Motorola promise. Also, the circumstances surrounding the new development leave much to be desired.
Motorola has a launch event in India for the Edge 50 Neo, which already debuted in Europe. The device runs the MediaTek Dimensity 7300 with up to 12 GB RAM and 512 GB ROM. It features Sony’s LYTIA camera sensors and runs Android 14 outside the box. While we expect the device to feature these specs in India, new details have emerged from the teaser page on Flipkart.
According to the listing, Motorola Edge 50 Neo will get five years of Android OS updates and five years of security updates. With the device running Android 14 outside the box, it’s guaranteed Android 19. However, Motorola’s track record with updates is not encouraging, and we won’t be surprised if they go back on this promise.
Currently, flagship Motorola phones get three years of Android OS updates and four years of security updates. However, the time these phones get new updates matters, and Motorola sucks at that. It took over a year to release Android 14 to the Razr+ 2023, and who knows the time frame for these new five years of updates.
Nonetheless, the company says it’s five years of assured software upgrades, meaning those five Android OS updates will come within five years of the Motorola Edge 50 Neo release. Only the device has been confirmed to get updates for that long. Of course, those in Europe are eligible. Hopefully, the company will extend the new update policy to other phones.
