Google Authenticator was launched sometime in 2010 (a long time ago) but the app finally allows for second-factor authentication to sync your Google Account. A nice move from Google. Should you have a vague understanding of how Google Authenticator works, let’s walk you through it.

Google Authenticator

Many people advocate Google Authenticator as a one-stop shop for protecting your online accounts with a second factor of authentication, or 2FA. It creates a unique, time-based code that you use in conjunction with your password to access online services; however, one disadvantage of the service is that it is always tethered to the phone that you’re using. Well, in a bid to not just allow the service to be available on the smartphone you’re using, it will now be able to sync to your Google account.

The feature has been awaited by a lot of Google Authenticator users. If you should have your phone broken or misplaced, you wouldn’t be able to access your 2FA codes. This made people go for alternatives like Twilio’s Authy to get their authentication done. With Google Authenticator now syncing to Google Account, users wouldn’t have to bother about getting a specific device to have their 2FA codes.

Meanwhile, it is worth noting that, once a scammer or an attacker gets hold of your Google Account, they will have easier access to all your online services. That said, it is better than losing access to them because of a code you can’t get to. You just have to guard your Google Account more carefully. Well, syncing Google Authenticator to Google Account is a very much user-friendly and convenient thing to do – if you had had your phone misplaced, you’ll know how much of a big deal it was before this feature arrived.
