These Google Pixel 9 camera features might be coming to your Android phone

It has been a few weeks since Google released the Pixel 9 series. As usual, these phones come with features that will eventually be available for older Pixel phones and Android phones in general. The Pixel 9 is no different, as it brings some fascinating camera editing features. While there is no official confirmation from Google if these features will be coming to older Pixel phones, new evidence shows some might be heading in that direction.

Google Pixel 9 camera features

Google Pixel camera remains the best, and with the addition of AI, the company has taken its device photography to a different level. Each year, new features are released with the new Pixel phones. They have added Add Me, Video Boost with Night Sight, and others. In addition, Auto Frame and Reimagine have been added to Magic Editor features, which have remained exclusive to the Pixel 9 series.

According to the latest app teardown of the Google Photos app, older Pixel might get the Auto Frame and Reimagine features. The former lets you add frames to a chosen subject, while the latter enables you to change backgrounds. These are nice editing features and will be a welcome addition to older Pixel phones.

Meanwhile, there are three variants of the Google Photos app, each with a different configuration. There’s a variant for Pixels launched in 2024, Pixels launched between 2021 and 2023, and all Android phones. Of course, the app version for 2024 Pixel phones has all the code strings relating to Auto Frame and Reimagine. They are also seen in the Google Photos app (v6.99) for the Pixel 6, Pixel 7, and Pixel 8 series, hinting at an imminent arrival for these phones.

Unfortunately, the general version of the Google Photos app for all Android phones does contain these strings, meaning Google is not actively working on these Google Pixel 9 camera features for non-Pixel phones. They will probably release it in the future, but they remain Pixel exclusive for now.

We expect these features to arrive with a future Quarterly Platform release. You should follow our social media platforms to know when it becomes available.
