According to the recently obtained Google Pixel Q1 2023 shipment report, the sales figures for Pixel devices have shown promising growth. Since its inception in 2016, a total of 27.6 million Pixel devices have been acquired, which is a notable achievement for the brand. However, it is important to note that this number is still relatively small compared to the sales volumes of giants like Apple and Samsung.
Nevertheless, Google‘s Pixel brand is on the rise. In Q1 2023, global shipments of Pixel devices increased by 67% year-on-year, largely attributed to the success of the Pixel 7 and Pixel 7 Pro. Interestingly, Japan has emerged as a significant market for Pixel sales, accounting for 34% of all shipments in Q1 2023. This is a significant increase from the 10% share during the same period the previous year.

In Japan, Google currently holds the second-largest market share in smartphones, trailing only Apple. This market dominance has been bolstered by the withdrawal of local brands, creating opportunities for US companies like Google and Apple to solidify their presence in Japan.
The mid-range Pixel 7a has also received a positive response from consumers. Within the first three weeks of its launch, the Pixel 7a experienced a 74% increase in total shipments compared to the previous year’s Pixel 6a. The success of the Pixel 7a can be attributed to factors such as the updated Google Tensor 2 processor, the camera performance, and the device’s 8GB of RAM.
Furthermore, the availability of the Pixel 7a through all three major Japanese carriers—SoftBank, AU, and DOCOMO—has contributed to its strong performance in the market. The Pixel 6a was already the best-selling Android model in Japan for seven consecutive months, and with the Pixel 7a’s even better start, Google has reason to be optimistic about its prospects in the nation.
Overall, while the Pixel brand may not yet rival the sales numbers of industry giants, its growth in global shipments and the positive reception of devices like the Pixel 7a indicate a positive trajectory for Google’s smartphone business.
