Google became the first smartphone company to promise seven years of support for their device when they launched the Pixel 8 series. That automatically was carried over to the Pixel 9 series that arrived recently. They are the only smartphone company, along with Samsung to support their device for that long, but it’s only their phones and not wearables.
Google sends monthly updates to their smartwatches, and you will expect the company to support it for long periods, just like smartphones. It turns out the wearables are being treated differently, as it is now confirmed that they will get only three years of software support. These include the first-gen Pixel Watch, Pixel Watch 2, and Pixel Watch 3.
With the support period confirmed for the Pixel Watches, the Pixel Watch 3 will stop getting updates in October 2027). Perhaps Google might extend the support period, but that’s not guaranteed. We don’t know why they have chosen to support their Watches for just three years but have that in mind when purchasing one.
While we hope for a review in the support period for the Pixel Watches, the company is probably looking at a price point and setting the support period. In addition, it’s easier to change your smartwatch, given how much they cost, but they are all smart devices and should get the same treatment, perhaps.
