Google recently released the December 2023 Play System Updates. As usual, most devices are still running the October update, while some users are in September. Even Pixel phones are not running the latest update, and it seems Xiaomi users are having problems installing the Google Play System updates.
Google Play System update stuck on checking for updates issues was first reported on December 6, 2023. The issue seems exclusive to all Xiaomi phones. At first, it was thought to be an issue from Xiaomi, but it turns out the problem is from Google, and they seem to have fixed it.

The early fix of restarting the phone and clearing the cache memory of the Google Play app doesn’t seem to do the magic. Thanks to the Google team, the issue has now been fixed. Interestingly, a new update is currently rolling out for everyone. However, it will take some time to arrive on your device, but you can check via the settings app.
