Here’s how Face Unlock on Pixel 6 Pro will work

Face Unlock on Pixel 6 Pro has been a bone of contention since rumours revealed that there was supposed to be a Face Unlock on Pixel 6 Pro sometime in April. Well, the last phase of Android 13, Android 13 QPR1 Beta has kick-started with Beta 1 now available and the software talks about the Face Unlock experience in the Pixel 6 Pro.

What’s there to know about the Face Unlock on Pixel 6 Pro

First up, the Big G said the Face Unlock on Pixel 6 Pro will maximise its functionality when “there’s enough light and you’re not wearing a face mask or dark glasses”, normal glasses work fine. Noticeably, the brand doesn’t seem to talk of any hardware additions for this function, rather it’s making use of the already present camera.

So the whole issue of the Pixel 4’s dot projector, flood illuminator and all that being able to speed the process is just different. Other than using this method, the Pixel 6 Pro makes use of the DPAF and Tensor to give a more efficient face detection experience. These mentioned feats seem to be the core ingredient for the Face Unlock. While this is present in the Pixel 7 series, it’s absent in the lower Pixel 6 lineup, quite unfortunate.

There is also a noticeable difference in the scanning process compared to what we’re familiar with from the Google Pixel 4. You will have to hold your phone to eye level to kickstart the scanning process, looking at the animation, which can be obtained via the link at the end of this article. Allowing just one face, there are some inaccuracies in the Face Unlock on Pixel 6 Pro which the brand mentions.

  • Looking at the phone can unlock it even when you don’t intend to
  • Your phone can be unlocked by someone else if it’s held up to your face, even if your eyes are closed
  • Your phone can be unlocked by someone who looks a lot like you, like an identical sibling.

The Face Unlock on Pixel 6 Pro is labelled “Traffic Light” according to the beta software. Since there’s a sign of the Face Unlock on Pixel 6 Pro, it could come in just after the stable QPR and Pixel 7 in October.
