The crux of the matter lies in a novel feature introduced by Google—Hold Close to Cast—set to revolutionize the way users transfer media from their phones to tablets. Let’s delve into the details of this intriguing new capability.

What to know about the Hold Close to Cast

Recent revelations, as shared by Android specialist Mishaal Rahman in an X post, unveil Google’s plan to introduce a novel function known as “Hold close to cast” on Pixel Tablets. As the name aptly suggests, this feature empowers users to seamlessly transfer content from their phones to a Pixel Tablet by merely holding the phone in close proximity to the tablet. It’s worth noting that the functionality is yet to receive an official rollout.

Screenshots of the feature’s settings pages provide key insights. The instructions make it clear that both devices must be connected to the same private Wi-Fi network for the feature to function. Furthermore, it’s important to note that not all media apps will support this functionality.

The user experience is designed to be straightforward: “Reach your phone toward a Pixel Tablet to cast media.” The introductory screen emphasizes the simplicity, stating that you can cast media to any Pixel Tablet on the same Wi-Fi network by merely holding your phone in front of it—effortlessly convenient.

Follow-up: Here's a look at the settings page for this feature, which is apparently called "hold close to cast."

However, a crucial detail emerges—compatibility is contingent upon the presence of an Ultra-wideband processor (UWB) in the Pixel device. As such, the “Hold close to cast” feature might be exclusive to devices like the Pixel 6 Pro, Pixel 7 Pro, and Pixel Fold. While the screenshots may not explicitly indicate this, it’s a factor to consider. As Google unveils this functionality, more information about compatible devices is bound to emerge, providing a clearer picture of the devices that can harness the convenience of “Hold close to cast.”

With this innovation, Google continues to refine user experiences, offering seamless interactions that bridge the gap between devices and enhance the ecosystem’s functionality. As the world of technology evolves, Google’s Hold Close to Cast is poised to be a noteworthy addition to the realm of user-centric features.
