1. Inspect your device’s USB Port and the Cable

The USB cable may be broken or your port may need cleaning. Unplug the cable and check if it is broken anywhere, you can also plug it into another device to confirm that it is working. As for the USB port, use a can of compressed air and a shaved toothpick to clean it. When done, check again to see if it now works.

2. Restart Windows

If your USB port suddenly stops working on Windows, a restart might help as it could force the installation of missing drivers that can help fix the issue. To restart,  keep the USB device plugged in, and right-click on the Start menu. Select Shut down or sign out and then click on Restart.

3. Check for Windows Update

Windows updates are constantly released to fix issues and bugs associated with the PC and it is important to install these updates as soon as they are released. To check for Windows updates,

  • Launch Settings by pressing the Win+I keys.
  • Click on Windows Update.
  • Click on Check for updates.
  • Windows will then check for an update and them.
  • Install the updates and check if that fixes the issue.

4. Update USB Drivers

To update or reinstall drivers, follow the below steps:

  • Launch the Start menu.
  • Type device manager and select it from the search result.
  • Scroll down the Device Manager menu and click on the Universal Serial Bus controllers to expand it.
  • Uninstall each entry under the Universal Serial Bus controllers by right-clicking on it, and selecting the Uninstall device option.
  • Restart your PC and Windows will automatically reinstall the latest drivers.

5. Check Power Management settings

The Windows operating system sometimes turns off the power supply for unused USB ports, which can lead to the problem of USB ports not working on Windows 11/10.

To fix this:

  • Right-click on the Start button and select Device Manager.
  • On the Device Manager Screen, right-click on USB Root Hub and select Properties.
  • Switch to the Power Management tab and uncheck the “Allow the computer to turn off this device to save power” option.
  • Click on OK.
  • Repeat the above steps for any other USB Root Hubs.
  • Restart your computer and check.
