Coin flipping isn’t just for games of chance – it can be a useful tool in making decisions, too. Here’s a quick guide on how to flip a coin the next time you can’t decide between two options.

How to flip a coin

Flipping a coin the right way

To flip a coin, first, make a fist with your thumb facing up. Second, place the coin on your thumb. Third, quickly flick your wrist so that the coin goes into the air. Fourth, catch the coin in your other hand and cover it so that you can’t see which side is up. Finally, take a look at the side of the coin that’s facing up and make your decision based on that.

Choosing the right coin

When it comes to flipping a coin, not all coins are created equal. You’ll want to choose a coin that’s relatively well-balanced and not too lightweight – otherwise, it could be tricky to get it to flip properly. A heavier coin will also have more momentum, making it more likely to land on the side you want.

Making a fist with your thumb

Push the coin into the air using your thumb. Keep your thumb facing upward so that the coin will go up.

Put your thumb under your index finger

To avoid having the coin sticking all the way through between your first two fingers, catch the edge of the coin with your thumb. This will provide resistance when you bring your thumb up for the toss, helping you create a quick move to strike the coin.

Place the coin on top of the opening created by your thumb and index finger

Gap your thumb and index finger, and balance the coin on top of the opening so it doesn’t fall. You won’t be holding the coin when you flip it, so it needs to be able to stay without support.

Pull your thumb up quickly

To execute this move, quickly pull your thumb upwards. The coin will flip over and over as a result of the snap motion and the upward push from your hand. If you do it gently, the coin will spin fewer times.

Watch the coin in the air

This will help you catch it or find it if it rolls away after it hits the floor. It’s of no use flipping a coin if you can’t find it to see which side came up.

Wrapping up

The above guide is on how to flip a coin the right way. The next time you can’t make a decision, don’t agonize over it – just flip a coin! It may not be the most scientific method, but it’s quick, easy, and can help to take the emotion out of tough choices.
