Sharing is caring, but you might want to keep an eye on who is using your account when it comes to Netflix and Spotify. After all, you are the one paying for it. Many Netflix and Spotify users share their passwords with family and friends, but you’re not alone if you think a stranger is using yours.

How To See Someone using your Netflix and Spotify

Fortunately, you don’t have to wait until someone else messes up your Netflix and Spotify recommendations or, worse, locks you out of your account. There are several ways to see someone using your Netflix and Spotify account and stop them.

How To Check Your Netflix Account Viewing Activity

Netflix has a great feature that allows you to see the movies and shows each profile has viewed. To access this feature, follow these simple steps:

  • Go to the Netflix website and sign in to your account if you aren’t signed in already.
  • Click your profile located at the top right corner of the screen.
  • Proceed  by selecting Account.
  • From the Profile & Parental Controls section, select the profile you want.
  • Scroll down and click on Viewing Activity.

Netflix automatically keeps track of each account’s last viewed episode or movie, including the date and time someone watched it. If you see a show or movie on the list that you don’t recognize, someone else is likely using your account.

How To see Someone using your Netflix Account

Unfortunately, Netflix doesn’t have a feature that allows you to see the name of the person using your account. However, you can tell by checking your account’s viewing activity as explained above to see when and where the show or movie was viewed.

Also, you may notice some devices you don’t recognise when you select the “Manage access and devices” option. These devices will be streaming from a location you don’t recognize, pointing to suspicious activity.

How to Stop People From Using Your Netflix Account

If you suspect someone’s using your account illegally, you can take measures to stop them. First, change your Netflix password and select the “Require all devices to sign in again with new password” box. This way, everyone using the account will need to enter the new password to watch Netflix.

You can also sign out of Netflix on all your devices, so you don’t have to worry about someone using your account without your permission. To do this, follow these steps:

  • Go to Netflix and sign in to your account.
  • Click on your profile located at the top right corner of the screen.
  • Next, go to Account.
  • From the Security & Privacy section, select Manage access and devices. Netflix will show you a list of every connected device.
  • Click the “Sign out” button next to the device you want to sign out.

How to Detect Suspicious Spotify Account Activity

Concerning Spotify, there is a feature called Spotify Connect that enables users to switch from one device to another seamlessly. This feature can tell if someone is accessing an account simultaneously on two devices. Here’s how to check for suspicious activity:

  • On the desktop or Web app, while a track plays, click on the Spotify Connect icon located in the bottom-right corner of the screen to see all currently connected devices.
  • On mobile devices, launch the Spotify app, tap settings, go to ‘Devices,’ and under ‘Connect to a device,’ press the ‘Devices’ menu button. The device currently playing tracks should be listed at the very top.

If you identify an unfamiliar device, there’s a chance that someone is taking advantage of your Spotify account. You may also want to check their listening history on Spotify to see if there are recently played songs that are out of the ordinary.

How to Stop Other People Accessing Your Spotify Account

If you’re logged into Spotify on a device you’re not familiar with, visit your Account overview page and click “Sign out everywhere” at the bottom to ensure you’re logged out of everywhere.

Resetting your password is also essential in this case, so others with the old password can no longer access the account. Furthermore, it is advisable to revoke any unknown or unused app’s privileges from your Spotify account.

Final Words

Netflix and Spotify are great ways to watch movies & TV shows and music online respectively, but keeping your account safe is important. By following the tips above, you can make sure that no one’s using your account without your permission.
