The Metaverse has been pulling up many tweaks recently. Here’s the crux of the matter: One of the platforms in the Metaverse, Instagram, has introduced a new age verification feature to enhance transparency and ensure a safe platform to prevent scams. Quite a move from the Meta boss.
The new age verification feature is coming in for users in the USA, and they will have to submit an identification to use this service. In a bid to submit identification, it can be done by either making a video selfie of yourself or you will be asked to provide mutual friends that will vouch for your age. It is worth noting that Instagram is partnering with Yoti, a platform that specializes in online verification.
Introducing the new age verification feature means the brand is trying to dish out an age-appropriate experience. This can include “defaulting into private accounts, preventing unwanted contact from adults they don’t know, and limiting the options advertisers have to reach them with ads”.
How is the Instagram new age verification feature going to work?
The process for verification is either you provide an ID, upload a video selfie or bring mutual friends to vouch for your age. Once either of these is provided, Yoti, the platform which specializes in verification, moves to process the data for age verification.
When the age verification is complete, Meta and Yoti deleted your data because Meta has earlier said that it isn’t interested in the identity but just verification. While the brand has tried a verification before that had flaws, we hope this new verification feature is void of any defects.
In the case of mutual friends vouching for your age, the said mutual friends have to be up to 18 years of age or more and aren’t vouching for anyone else. Three people are needed and the process of verification will take three days.
