Other files under storage space keeps increasing after MIUI 12 update

Stable MIUI 12 for the Redmi Note 9s

There have been lots of bugs that were introduced by the MIUI 12 update, which developers are fixing with subsequent updates. But while they’re yet to fix all the reported bugs, there’s a report about a bug currently affecting the storage space. The other files under storage space keep increasing, and this started after the MIUI 12 update.

Going by the screenshot posted by a user in the Mi community forum. It shows the storage details of which “other” occupies a whopping 95.35GB while apps get about 1% of that; 6.35GB. A quick look at storage details of a Xiaomi phone still running MIUI 11 shows “other files” occupies most space after Apps & app data. Although the difference isn’t much but 95.35GB for other files is insane.

Meanwhile, the device that is affected by this storage bug is the Redmi Note 9. A Moderator has since acknowledged the bug and promised to check the issue with the team and then report back. And while moderators are yet to post feedback, another user has taken to Facebook, where he reported about the same issue.

Looking at the details that were posted on Facebook, the “other files” occupy more space, followed by apps and games. However, the difference isn’t much, unlike the first screenshot. Although there were lots of suggestions in the comments section on possible ways to fix the bug, we would recommend you wait for the moderator feedback.

We’ll update this post once we get feedback from the Moderator. Still, we would like to know if you’re facing this issue after updating to the latest MIUI 12 Android skin. To access other files under storage space, head over to settings>>my device>>storage. Compare your details with the pictures above and see if you’re also affected.

Update: 25/01/2021

According to a Moderator in the Mi community forum, “Those are cache files. Please check your app storage and see which app data is increasing.” You should make use of the cleaner app and clear app data and see if that helps.
