PayPal has announced the release of a Tap and Pay feature for businesses in the United States using Android phones through its Venmo and Zettle applications. Notably, PayPal owns both Venmo and Zettle. In November, the company introduced a similar capability for businesses in the United Kingdom to accept payments by tapping cards or digital wallets.

Further details on Tap and Pay on Android

The Tap and Pay functionality on Android is now available to all US-based businesses through Zettle, PayPal’s mobile point-of-sale management software. Venmo for business profile users will gradually gain access to this feature over the coming months, with some businesses already utilizing it. Retailers can also request early access to the functionality, according to PayPal.

This new capability allows sellers to accept payments from cards or digital wallets like Apple Pay or Google Pay without the need for additional hardware. For each sale made using the tap and pay mechanism on Zettle and Venmo, PayPal charges a fee of 2.29% + $0.09.

Ed Hallett, the head of product and micro business at PayPal, stated, “Tap to Pay is the last milestone in the democratization of in-person card payments, where users can start taking card payments with no setup cost in a matter of minutes. We’re unlocking access to this capability for the millions of businesses using Venmo and PayPal Zettle, helping them drive sales with frictionless payment options.” Furthermore, following the introduction of the functionality in November, PayPal is now rolling out support for tap-to-pay on iPhone for Venmo for Business and Zettle clients in the United States.

In summary, PayPal’s introduction of tap-to-pay capability for businesses using Android phones through Venmo and Zettle aims to provide frictionless payment options and enable businesses to accept card payments without setup costs quickly. This move underscores PayPal’s commitment to expanding in-person payment solutions and enhancing convenience for merchants and customers alike.
