Google confirmed its plan to support Pixel phones for seven years with Android updates starting with the Pixel 8 and Pixel 8 Pro. It seems Samsung will follow in Google’s footsteps and support Galaxy phones with seven years of Android updates.
Before Google confirmed its plan to support Pixel phones for seven years, Apple iPhones had the longest support period, while Samsung phones get four years of Android OS updates and five years of security support. If the latest report is true, Galaxy phones will get seven years of Android updates, same as Google.
However, while all Pixel phones, starting from the Pixel 8 and Pixel 8 Pro, will get seven years of Android updates, only select Galaxy phones will be updated for that period. Only some Galaxy S-series and A-series phones will receive seven years of Android updates, unlike Google and Apple, which support all the phones in their portfolio.
Nevertheless, it’s a welcome development to see phone makers support their phones for a longer period. Perhaps, users will not replace their phones due to lack of updates, but would these phones hold up for seven years? From what we have seen these past few years, we think it can, and with spare parts now available, it’s probably the best time to increase the support period for smartphones.
Meanwhile, Samsung has not confirmed the reports yet. We expect an official confirmation during the January 17 event to debut the Galaxy S24 series phones. We will also learn the devices that will get seven years of Android support since we know only select phones will be eligible.
