The Digital Key feature by Samsung is available on most Galaxy devices and in the US. any phone brands have been trying to modify their smartphone in a way for them to be able to serve as car keys. The Korean tech giant, Samsung had made a smart move by introducing the feature sometime last year at the Galaxy unpacked event. While most tech enthusiasts were proud of the development, one shortcoming was that it offered limited support.
Digital Key feature by Samsung has started expanding from South Korea to other regions, the first being the US. Samsung has collaborated with the Hyundai Motor Group to make the GV60 Genesis electric vehicle which is the first to support ultra-wideband digital keys with Galaxy devices.
The Digital Key feature will be making use of NFC and UWB, ultra-wideband to help users perform many actions among which are locking and unlocking the user’s car, adjusting seats, starting engines and a lot more using smartphones. While the Korean tech giant had recently made this support available in South Korea, the feature is finally going global.
The Digital Key feature by Samsung is appearing on select Galaxy devices, mostly the flagship lineup, speaking of Galaxy S22 series, Galaxy Z Fold 3, S21 series, Z Fold 2, and Galaxy Note 20 Ultra.
Genesis GV60 Digital Key feature by Samsung appears via Samsung Pass
Interestingly, the GV60 uses UWB to enable your smartphone to connect and communicate with your car. The Digital Key feature by Samsung will be gotten via Samsung Pass which is a secured system for storing passwords, digital signatures and other personal security access codes.
To enable any of the supported smartphones to act as a Digital Key, you’ll need to go on the Genesis Connected Service app to register the device after which you’ll be able to use the smartphone as a digital Key to the GV60.
Some catchy enhancements are being able to unlock the car by simply walking to it(when with your smartphone), remotely starting the car before entering the vehicle(using the engine button on the Samsung Pass), as well as sharing the feature with three of your contacts (if they have any of the aforementioned devices).
However, the Digital Key feature by Samsung is not available on any other car in the US. We expect the brand to collaborate with other car brands to enable support for more cars. The GV60 is available in the US with a starting MSRP of $58 890.
