Google has been showing its prowess when it comes to photography, courtesy of the Tensor chipset and then impressive camera software update rollout. Adding to these impressive feats, The Camouflage tool is making its way to the Google Pixel 6 and Pixel 6 Pro.
What do we know of this Pixel 6 and Pixel 6 Pro camouflage tool
Usually, we get the Magic eraser tool, capable of getting rid of objects and people you don’t want in the background of your pictures, more like an editing functionality. What makes it worth the fuss is that the result is quite consistent and they are simple to use, although nothing to make Adobe worry about, at least for now.
Having selected a part of a photo, it simply uses the information to remove objects and in turn fill the space. The effect of the Erase tool is more amazing when the unwanted image is far from the main focal image.
The tool however comes with a little shortcoming. If the unwanted object you’re trying to remove is overlapping the focus image, the result won’t look good. The aftermath is a problem in trying to fill up the space and with no solution for that, it creates a bigger object to be considered as a distraction.
This is where the Camouflage tool comes in. Rather than causing a big distraction, the tool just desaturates it and removes the distraction stigma. For instance, having a bright red couch might be a distraction that the eraser will make a mess out of, that’s where the Camouflage tool comes in to desaturate the object making it less distracting. A good illustration is the screenshot shared at the beginning of the article where the tool desaturates the purple baby stroller.
That said, the two work better together with portrait mode. Portrait mode can be used directly when you want to blur some objects in the background but you don’t want to erase them, especially when it gives your photo context.
The eraser tool is quite efficient when you are not using the portrait mode and the unwanted object is far from the subject image. In the case of any overlapping, camouflage functions to desaturate the unwanted object. Meanwhile, Camouflage is coming to the Google Pixel 6 and Pixel 6 Pro on the day scheduled for Pixel 6a pre-order, July 28.
