Threads by Meta is now official. The new social media platform went live yesterday against the supposed July 6, 2023 launch, which is today. However, the platform is limiting its functionalities to 100 markets, which include the United States and the United Kingdom. The reason is the weaker privacy laws, but we expect expansion to other regions in the coming weeks/months.
Availability of Threads by Meta
While those in the UK can access all functionalities of Threads by Meta, users in European Union regions are restricted for now, as confirmed by a representative from Ireland’s Data Protection Commission (DPC). Perhaps, the company needs more time to sort out the privacy issues with the app in these regions before it becomes available. And if you’re wondering why those in the UK can access the app, it’s because they’re no longer part of the European Union.
Meanwhile, People in select regions are already making use of the App. It was Mark Zuckerberg, the CEO of Meta and founder of Facebook, posted the first message on Threads using his Instagram username. The platform can be accessed through the URL threads.net, with the username format being the same as on Instagram.
For users in regions where Threads by Meta is not fully available, attempts to like, comment, or reply to content will display a message stating, “Threads have not yet rolled out to your region.” However, users can continue to read the material until the platform is fully accessible.
The Irish Data Protection Commission contacted Meta regarding Threads and raised concerns about the platform’s data importation from Instagram, which includes behavioral and advertising data. It’s important to note that the DPC is not deliberately blocking the platform, but rather, Meta has not yet prepared the service for a European launch that aligns with the privacy standards set by the EU’s General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR).
