Yesterday saw the first chipset built on the 5nm process unveiled by Apple. The Apple A14 Bionic SoC is what powers the iPad Air and will also feature in the iPhone 12 series. Qualcomm is always going to respond by releasing a SoC that will match the performance of the new Apple chip, just like it always does. However, the news of a new Qualcomm chip that’ll be built on the 5nm process isn’t coming from company directly, but from Chinese OEMs – Xiaomi and Realme.
Going by the post made on Weibo by Lu Weibing, Redmi General manager, he said, “Are you looking forward to new products based on 5nm process processors?” Of course, yes. The next Qualcomm premium SoC, which is the Snapdragon 875, will be built on the 5nm process. It’s expected to debut later this year and will take on the Apple A14 Bionic chip.
upcoming Redmi phone with Qualcomm’s 5nm process processor
The Snapdragon 875 is expected to power the Mi 11 or Mi 20, which will debut just before the Chinese Spring festival. However, the Xiaomi sub-brand is likely to release a device with the SoC before the parent company. Going by recent rumors, the upcoming Redmi device to feature the 5nm process processor is the K40 Pro.
Also, the device will use a full-screen display, big battery, high-power charging, and large pixel lens, according to Digital Chat Station. Aside from the rumored specs, the device will also feature other specs of the Snapdragon 875 SoC.
The Redmi K40 Pro will be among the first few phones to run the premium SoC. It’s expected to debut early next year and will hit the market afterward. And given the events of last year, we expect the vanilla version, supposedly the Redmi K40, to debut later this year.
Of course, these are all rumors as there hasn’t been any official confirmation from the Chinese OEM. The only thing that’s certain as of this time is the coming of a Snapdragon 875-powered Redmi phone, given the teaser that was released by Lu Weibing on Weibo earlier today.
