The virtual RAM Expansion for Xiaomi phones was first reported in May 2021. It was developer, Kacper Skrzypek, that broke the news. According to him, Xiaomi buried it inside MIUI 12.5 firmware, but he was able to decide it after careful examination. As of then, they called it ‘Memory Extension’ but have now renamed it to Virtual Memory Expansion. The idea is to allocate part of the internal memory to the RAM when handling demanding apps and games. And from reports, the feature is now available for Xiaomi phones starting with the Redmi Note 10 Pro 5G.
The latest Redmi Note 10 Pro 5G update brings the Virtual Memory Expansion. Unlike the early exposure that suggests the system will allocate 1GB RAM, the system will add up to 2GB of the internal storage to the RAM. That’s to say, for a device that boasts 6GB or 8GB of RAM, it will get 8GB or 10GB of RAM, respectively.
We may see Virtual RAM expansion mostly on premium mid-range Xiaomi phones. Perhaps, that’s where it’s needed most as these budgets phones debut mostly with 6GB or 8GB of RAM, which is relatively small for a heaver user. However, with the latest development, multiple applications can run simultaneously without lag. Nevertheless, we expect a wider rollout in the coming weeks, but it might arrive globally with MIUI 13.
Xiaomi is working on the next iteration of MIUI, and we have already started seeing some of that features. Although most of it has seeded for the closed beta group, we expect them to debut as part of MIUI 13 still. They include security features like Power off confirmation and the latest addition to the battery saver that allows users to choose between Performance and Balance mode.
Of course, that’s not all, and we expect to learn about it in the coming weeks. That said, you should keep an eye on our website for all the latest features arriving with each closed beta release.
