Smartphone OEMs have made massive improvements in their phone’s hardware in the last couple of years. That has made some people reluctant to change their phones yearly as before. It’s now more important than ever that smartphone makers increase the number of years they support their phones. Google and OnePlus are already committed to providing three Android OS updates to their phones. Samsung has also done the same, and Xiaomi will inevitably join the pack.
The Chinese company is slowly moving to provide its phones with three Android OS upgrades in a four-year support period. They first communicated their plans when they released the Xiaomi 11T and 11T Pro, and it seems they are not limiting to the flagship segment. However, the new policy is currently exclusive to newly released phones as Xiaomi is yet to include the likes of the Mi 11 series on the eligible list to get three Android OS updates.
Nevertheless, we expect the company to make the announcement soon, given that it has now confirmed the recently released Xiaomi 11 Lite NE 5G for three Android OS updates and four years of security patch support. And given that the device debuted with Android 11, it will get Android 12, 13, and 14. That’s commendable, and we hope Xiaomi extends the support to more phones.
For now, the only phones confirmed officially to receive three Android OS updates are Xiaomi 11T, 11T Pro, and 11T Lite NE 5G. Although the company is yet to include the Xiaomi Mi 11 series, we believe the support will eventually extend to the phones. That said, we will keep eye on the development and will update this space when it’s confirmed. Meanwhile, if you’re using any of the phones, you can follow our tracker pages to know when a new update is released.
