One of the biggest highlights of the current Android OS is the Material You dynamic wallpaperdesign. The feature, at the time of unveiling, was limited to Pixel phones. With the unveiling of Android 12L, Google gave OEM the chance to adapt the Material You design. We have seen the feature debut on Samsung, Oppo, and even Google phones, while Xiaomi MIUI 13 based Android 12 builds have omitted the function so far. However, it seems things are changing with the latest closed beta builds.
Xiaomi released the MIUI 13 Android skin last month, with a handful of phones in China running the build. It’s based on Android 12 for the phones on the latest iteration of MIUI, but they miss out on many Android 12 specific features. The Material You dynamic wallpaper theming is one of such features, but it seems Xiaomi is bringing it to, perhaps, some of its phones.
According to reports, the current closed beta MIUI 13 V22.1.17 brings support for Material You dynamic wallpaper theming. We can confirm that from screenshots that have surfaced online. Looking at the picture above, activating a wallpaper with a primary pink color triggers the Android 12 monet engine. That also happened when the wallpaper was changed to a green color.
However, it seems only Google apps support the Material You dynamic wallpaper theming on Xiaomi phones. MIUI system apps interface maintains their original color. It’s unclear at the moment when it will be enabled on system apps, but we understand that’ll be much later in the feature. Also, we don’t expect it on global models with the release of MIUI 13. Xiaomi will probably release the function in subsequent MIUI 13-based Android 12 builds
