Xiaomi is now rolling out the Android 10-based MIUI 12 update to all global Redmi Note 8 users. It has taken the company months to finalize the rollout, and now that almost everyone using the device has probably received the update, we will try to look at what awaits the device users in the coming weeks.
The Redmi Note 8 debuted in August 2019, running Android 9 on top of MIUI 10. It was always going to receive both the MIUI 11 and Android 10 update. In late 2019, Xiaomi started pushing the former to eligible users, and after one year, it looks to have finalized the Android 10 upgrade, which arrived alongside MIUI 12.
But even before it started pushing the Android 10-based MIUI 12 update to everyone, they already confirmed the Redmi Note 8 and Note 8 Pro will get a new OS upgrade. That came as a surprise because it’s only on a rare occasion that Xiaomi rolls out two OS upgrades to its mid-range phones. And why some people were still skeptical about the new development, the company communicated its move to unveil MIUI 12.5 instead of MIUI 13.
From what we could understand, they needed to improve the stability of the current version of MIUI (MIUI 12) first. That looks like it, going by the features of MIUI 12.5, which is the optimization and improvement of existing MIUI features. The rollout plan then confirmed officially the Redmi Note 8 Android 11 plans, with the device missing out on the early bird list due to a major Android upgrade.
Of course, we knew it was the Android 11 being talked about, which has now arrived in China for the closed beta tester. The build is available for those participating in the MIUI 12.5 closed beta testing, and that confirms a similar rollout plan with the just concluded Android 10-based MIUI 12 update.
The Redmi Note 8 will receive Android 11 alongside the MIUI 12.5 update. However, it’s unclear when Xiaomi plans to roll out the update to stable ROM users. According to the official rollout plan, the stable version of the update will start seeding in April. It’ll first arrive on the premium phones before making it to the mid-range device, and that’s when Redmi Note 8 is likely to get the update.
Unfortunately, Xiaomi hasn’t communicated when it plans to start the second phase of the rollout, but we hope to learn that very soon. However, we expect the Redmi Note 8 to receive the Android 11 update in Q3 of this year, and hopefully, it will be a smooth transition – far from what happened with the Android 10-based MIUI 12 update. And from now, expect a stable update every three months.
