For years Qualcomm has dominated the smartphone chip industry but has come under increasing pressure from Mediatek in the last couple of months. That’s probably, what led to the change in approach. The company recently introduced Snapdragon 888 high-premium chip, is already powering flagship phones of the year. They also introduced a Snapdragon 870 and SD 860, all in the 800series lineup. And now, Qualcomm has refreshed the 700series offering with the release of the Snapdragon 780G SoC. Of course, the “G” means the chip is optimized for gaming.

Meanwhile, the Snapdragon 780G is built on a 5nm process, making it the first to do so in that segment. It utilizes a Kryo 670 CPU with an uplift in performance of up to 40% to the predecessor. The cores are clocked at 2.4GHz, and that matches the power cores of the Snapdragon 888. However, the SD 888 has a prime cortex -X1 core at 2.84GHz. There’s an Adreno 642 GPU with improved performance, which places it between the Snapdragon 855 and 865 chips. That means that you will get flagship performance with Snapdragon 780G phones.

The Qualcomm Snapdragon 780G supports LPDDR5 RAM at up to 2.1GHz and can accommodate 16GB RAM. It has a triple spectra 570 ISP, meaning that the image stream from three cameras is processed simultaneously. That gives the SoC a flagship camera performance, and hence, it will deliver one of the best camera shots. The Image Signal Processor supports a single 84MP camera with zero shutter lag activated or a single camera of 192MP. It also supports 10-bit color depth for photos and video and supports recording in HDR10, HDR10+, and HLG.

Qualcomm snapdragon 780G phones will support FullHD+ display up to 144Hz, and a maximum external display of 4K @60Hz. The SoC is HDR10 and HDR10+ certified, meaning a better display experience, especially for streaming and playing games.

Of course, the SoC features Qualcomm AI Engine. It’s the company’s 6th generation. With the Hexagon 770 AI engine, the SoC offers an impressive 12 TOPS. It will improve processing speed in the high-end smartphone segment. The SoC is equipped with X53 5G modem with a maximum download speed of up to 3.3Gbps, but surprisingly, doesn’t support mmWave.

However, the SoC integrates the FastConnect 6900, meaning it supports Wi-Fi 6E with a peak speed of up to 3.6Gbps. Snapdragon 780G phones will support Bluetooth 5.2 with Qualcomm’s advanced audio features, which include customizable ” Golden Ears” filters. And for charging, there’s Quick Charge 4+, but a disappointing USB 3.1 for data transfers.

Again, Xiaomi is the first smartphone brand to release a snapdragon 780G phone. Qualcomm only unveiled the SoC a couple of days ago, and from the features, it sits between the SD 855 and 865 in terms of performance. Hence, it will offer a flagship performance for less.

The Xiaomi Mi 11 Lite 5G features a 6.55-inch OLED panel with a single puch hole at the top left. It refreshes at 90Hz and has a touch sampling rate of 240Hz under the protection of a Corning Gorilla Glass 6. Of course, under the helm is Qualcomm Snapdragon 780G SoC with up to 8GB RAM and 128GB of storage.

At the back panel is a Mi 11 camera design but features a different sensor. It has a primary 64MP shooter, an 8MP ultra-wide lens, and a 5MP macro shooter, while the selfie camera sports a 16MP snapper. The fingerprint scanner sits on the power button while the device draws power from a 4520mAh battery. It supports 33W fast charging and will take less than an hour for a full charge.

Unfortunately, there’s no headphone jack but features a dual stereo speaker. It supports Bluetooth 5.2, NFC and will be offered in Black, Yellow, and Green colors.
