The Windows Management Instrumentation error 1083 occurs when a user attempts to download updates from “Windows Update” or the “Microsoft Update Website.” This issue is caused by a problem with the DLL file registration, which stops the Background Intelligent Transfer Service (BITS) from connecting to the update site. It’s also possible that BITS isn’t even installed on the system.

Steps to fix the Windows Management Instrumentation Error 1083 on Windows

To fix error 1083 on any version of Windows, follow these steps:

  • Using the keys Windows+R, open the Run Dialog.
  • Press Enter after typing the command below.

services.msc

  • If a User Access Control window appears, select Yes.

Note: Changing the registry can be risky. Even the slightest error can have a tremendous impact on the system. Before starting, it is recommended that you make a backup of the registry keys. Click File > Export > Give a name > Save the File in the Registry window to create a backup.

  • The windows for the Registry Editor will then appear. Enter the following address in the top search bar and press Enter.

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Svchost

  • Locate a multi-value key named netsvcs on the right-hand side.
  • To change the value of netsvcs, double-click it.
  • Add the entry winmgmt to the end of the Edit window that appears and press Enter.
  • All you have to do now is restart the system.
