The Redmi K20 / Mi 9T becomes the latest Xiaomi phone to start receiving a stable Android 11 update. We anticipated the update, but with MIUI 12.5. However, the update is now available in India, but sans the latest iteration of MIUI. It means Xiaomi plans to roll out the new OS for the Redmi K20 with a separate update.

Android 11-based MIUI 12 update for Redmi K20 / Mi 9T

Xiaomi has been rolling out MIUI 12.5 and Android 11 simultaneously for a handful of phones in recent weeks. The Redmi K20, which received its first Android 11-based MIUI 12.5 update in China a couple of weeks ago, was hoping to get the same treatment. But as things are now, the device will receive the update differently as Xiaomi starts pushing an Android 11-based MIUI 12 update for Redmi K20 / Mi 9T.

The update, as usual, is on a limited rollout, meaning only a select few will receive it for preview. After the beta preview, which will last for a couple of days, the public rollout will commence. However, with an authorized Mi Beta account or TWRP recovery, You can download the ROM and flash manually.

Meanwhile, the Android 11-based MIUI 12 update for Redmi K20 / Mi 9T is hitting the device in India. It comes as MIUI 12.1.2.0 RFJINXM, along with a stable MIUI based on Android 11. The update made few changes in Xiaomi Mi Cloud, making it possible to report location automatically before the device is powered off. And according to reports, it added the option to restore widevine L1. To do that, you have to head over to Security >>Fingerprints >>Fingerprints Payment >>Widevine L1.

Note: the current update is a cross-section Android upgrade. We recommend that you backup your data before upgrading in a situation where factory reset becomes necessary afterward. Also, third-party launchers stop working after the upgrade, and hence, you’ll have to revert to the system launcher to keep using gestures.

Unfortunately, we don’t know when the update will be available in other regions. That said, you should keep an eye on our tracker page to know when the update becomes available in your region.
