In August 2020, we reported that Xiaomi was working on a Back tap gesture function. The feature had only debuted with iOS 14 and was also part of the many features of Android 11. It was expected to arrive on Xiaomi phones with Android 11 but did not happen. At least for the international models. However, with the stable MIUI 13 update, Xiaomi has enabled the Back Tap gesture function for select users.
The Back Tap gesture function allows users to easily execute some functions, depending on their preference, by double-tapping the back of their device. There are many options to choose from, which include, taking a screenshot, launching the camera app, initiating a voice assistant, and others. Interestingly, you can set different preferences depending on the number of taps at the back. For instance, task the device to take a screenshot on double-tap or launch the camera app by tapping three times.
Before now, this function has been exclusive to Chinese users, but with the stable MIUI 13, select phones have it enabled after upgrading. The POCO F2 Pro, which recently got updated to Android 12 with MIUI 13, has the function under additional settings. Below are the steps to activate and customize the Back Tap gesture function.
How to activate the Back Tap gesture function
- Step 1. Launch the Settings app and click on additional settings
- Step 2. Click on Gesture Shortcuts and scroll down to Custom Gestures
- Step 3. Tap on Back Tap
- Step 4. Click on Double back tap drop down to select your preference from the list of available functions. Also, do the same to set an option for the triple tap.
Now, when you tap the back of your device, depending on the number of times, your pre-selected function will be triggered. Unfortunately, the option is only available for select users after the MIUI 13 upgrade, but you can follow the steps above to check if the Back Tap gesture function is available on your device.
