Google Pixel 8 Pro renders:Flat Display and possible LiDAR sensor

The Google Pixel 8 Pro, the successor to the Pro version of the Pixel 7 is almost here (of course with the vanilla variant as well). As usual, there will be leaks and this time, we have some features of the Google Pixel 8 Pro.

Details of the Google Pixel 8 Pro

Our first look at the Google Pixel 8 Pro in CAD-based leaks, courtesy of @OnLeaks and SmartPrix, shows off a design that’s pretty similar to the Pixel 7 Pro but with some noticeable and welcome tweaks.

For one thing, the phone looks to have finally abandoned its curved display, at least in part. The display lacks the characteristic curve featured on Google’s previous two Pro versions, but there’s still an opportunity for minor curves along the borders. In any case, considering the frustration associated with curved screens, it’s a significant improvement in our opinion.

Importantly, the display looks to have considerably thinner bezels all around compared to previous Google phones, however, this is a detail that’s easy to get wrong with CAD-based models. We won’t know for sure until we see the finished result.

The inclusion of a new sensor on the Google Pixel 8 Pro’s camera bar is what’s most exciting here. The phone features the same triple-camera setup as the Pixel 6 Pro and Pixel 7 Pro, but this time all three sensors are gathered into a single large cutout on the camera bar. Yet, there is a fourth sensor on the right side.

At the time, it was unknown what this sensor accomplishes. It may be anything as basic as a better-focusing mechanism, like what Samsung offers on the Galaxy S23 Ultra, a macro or depth sensor, like many other phones today, or something more sophisticated. One possibility is LIDAR, which Max Weinbach(from 9to5google) has already heard about.

Whatever it is, it’s fascinating to see Google continue to improve on this design over time. The Pixel 8 Pro has dimensions of 162.6×76.5×8.7mm. This is somewhat smaller than the Pixel 7 Pro’s dimensions of 162.9×76.6×8.9mm. A display size of around 6.52 inches has been reported.

The Pixel 8 Pro is scheduled to launch later this year, almost certainly with a Tensor G3 CPU. It’s unclear if the basic Pixel 8 will have this mystery new sensor, but the phone will be smaller.
