Google Pixel Fold fails the durability test: takeways

JerryRigEverything took the Pixel Fold through the channel’s standard durability test today, examining the scratch resistance of the outside and inner screens. When heat was introduced to the inside display of the phone during the fire test, it simply shut down.

The dust torture test even performed admirably, with no dust entering the hinge. The foldable performs similarly to Samsung’s foldables in the first few tests, but fails miserably in the bend test.

When the foldable was pushed to its limits, the phone’s structure gave way along the antenna lines, resulting in a gadget that cracked in half. The hinge, which Google boasts as the “most durable,” withstands any abuse here, with the rest of the phone giving way very instantly, killing the display and preventing the Fold from ever shutting again. While it’s quite visible that the Google Pixel Fold fails the durability test, it’s still a good foldable overall. I mean, no one will want to put their smartphone through those wild tests.

Meanwhile, reports surfaced regarding potential issues with the Google Pixel Fold internal screen. Users have raised concerns about pink lines appearing on the screen after only a short period of use, while others have experienced problems such as peeling screen protectors, scratches, lifting laminate, and spider web cracks.

These issues are reminiscent of the challenges faced by Samsung with the original Galaxy Fold back in 2019. Influencers had mistakenly removed the protective plastic coating on the devices, causing damage to the screens. Although Google sources its screens from Samsung, it is important to note that a single faulty screen should not be a cause for widespread concern. However, given the history of issues with some Pixel models, Pixel Fold users should remain vigilant.
