Google to compete with Apple Airtag with Grogu tracker

Google is developing a Bluetooth tracking device(Grogu Tracker)to rival Apple’s AirTags, as per recent studies. The company has been incorporating ultra-wideband (UWB) connectivity in its premium smartphones, such as the Pixel 6 Pro and Pixel 7 Pro, since 2021 but while the technology has only been utilized in specific situations like opening a car door or transferring files to a friend, it’s evident that Google intends to expand its usage in the future.

Further details of the Grogu Tracker

As reported by 9to5Google, Google is developing a Nest speaker that will feature ultra-wideband (UWB) technology, allowing users to quickly transfer music by placing their Pixel phone close to the speaker. Additionally, Google has been working to expand its “Find My Device” app to make use of the millions of Android devices to locate lost or stolen devices. For reference, AirTags are a popular way to keep track of devices by emitting Bluetooth and UWB signals, which can be located within inches, thanks to the large number of iPhones in use, in Apple’s ecosystem.

So similarly, Google is said to be developing a tracking accessory, known internally as “Grogu,” “GR10,” or “Groguaudio,” or simply the Grogu Tracker, to compete with Apple’s AirTags and potentially increase the usefulness of ultra-wideband (UWB) on Pixel phones.

This information comes from Android researcher Kuba Wojciechowski. According to the leaks, the Nest team is leading the development of the device, which may come in multiple colors. The codename “Grogu”(a codename of Grogu tracker) is a reference to the popular Star Wars series “The Mandalorian.”

The “Groguaudio” codename implies that Google’s tracker device could come with a built-in speaker, similar to Apple’s AirTags. The speaker serves as a location aid and a privacy measure, as it makes a sound when it is moved away from its owner.

Meanwhile, Google is reportedly working on “Unfamiliar device alerts” that will notify Android users of any trackers in the vicinity. As interesting as it is, it’s quite online unclear when Grogu Tracker will launch or how long it has been in development.

Considering that the UWB-enabled Nest Audio successor is expected to launch in either fall 2023 or spring 2024, a tracker with similar UWB support may launch in one of those windows.
