Microsoft Works is a productivity software suite that contains a word processor, a database management system, and a spreadsheet, among other features. The program can be used to generate basic files, keep track of meetings, organize data, and perform other basic tasks.
Microsoft announced in late 2009 that Works for Windows would be phased out and replaced with Office 2010 Starter Edition. However, by installing it in Compatibility mode on Windows 10/11, you may still use it.

Steps to Download, Install & Run Microsoft Works on Windows
You can grab a version of the Microsoft Works ISO image from the archive.org page, even though it is no longer officially available for download. After you’ve downloaded it, follow the steps below to install and run Microsoft Works;
- First, double-click on the image to mount it
- Proceed by opening the mounted location to configure the setup.exe file.
- Click Next on the welcome screen, and you’ll be requested to choose a location for Microsoft Works to be installed. Click Next again.
- Then, click Next after selecting an installation option that meets your requirements.
- To begin the installation procedure, click Install.
- After that, you’ll be sent to a pop-up menu starting that your installation is successful, where you need to select Finish to complete the installation.
- You can launch Microsoft Works normally on your computer by selecting it from the Start Menu or by using the Desktop shortcut. If it still won’t open, you can try running it in Compatibility Mode to see if that helps.

To run Microsft Works in Compatibility Mode, follow the steps below;
- Open the File Explorer by pressing the Win + E key, then navigate to C: > Program Files (x86) > Microsoft Works.
- Locate the MSWorks.exe file in the Microsoft Works folder, right-click it, and select Troubleshoot compatibility.
- The best compatibility mode for the program will be automatically detected by this troubleshooter. Select Try recommended settings when you’re done.
- Finally, to open Microsoft Works on your Windows PC, click Test the program.
