Google has released the stable Android 15 update to Pixel phones. As expected, the latest release introduced the Private Space feature, which has been in development for months. I believe it’s worth the wait as you can finally hide sensitive apps from people.
With the Private Space, you can hide or lock apps in a separate space. Google recommends using a different account for extra security. This is because, using a special account, you won’t worry about sync files, photos, and emails appearing outside your space.
However, apps stop working while they are locked in private space, and hence, you won’t receive notifications. The feature isn’t suitable for apps that need to be working in the background. If you lock this type of app, you can miss important notifications.
While apps on your private space won’t appear in the permission manager, privacy dashboard, and other settings, someone can see these apps when they connect your device to a computer. We understand apps in Private Space cannot be transferred to a new phone, as you have to set up another one. Below is how to set up Private Space on your new or old Android phone.
How to set up Private Space on Android phones
- Launch the Settings app and head to Settings & privacy.
- Tap on it and scroll down to Private Space.
- When you click on Private space, you need to confirm your biometrics.
- Tap on setup and wait for set up to finish.
- Next, you will be asked to create a new Google account. You can click Do it later or Got it.
- If you choose to do it later, the next page will ask for a new lock for your Private space.
- Confirm your device lock, and you can then choose a lock for the Private Space.
- You can choose Pattern, PIN, or Password, but all are associated with a fingerprint.
- After choosing your security lock, click Done. It will take a few seconds to complete the process, then click Done again.
To access your Private Space, scroll down to the search bar on your home screen. You will see a lock icon on the right and Private on the left. Of course, you can make it disappear from there and access it by typing Private Space on the search bar.
- Head to Settings>>Security & privacy
- Tap on Private Space and confirm your biometrics
- Click on Hide Private Space
- Toggle on Hide Private Space when it is locked
This space is like having another user account on your Android phone. You have a duplicate of Google Photos, Files, Chrome, and the new Pixel Screenshots app. Each app on the space saves data to the file path within it, meaning when you take a screenshot while using an App in a Private space, it will appear on the locked version, the same thing as when you download or save a picture with an app on a private space.
